Cairns School Holiday – Night Walk – Cairns Botanic Gardens

School Holiday Special Let's Go Buggin Night Walk Cairns Botanic Gardens

Saturday 2nd, 9th, 16th & 23rd July (6 – 8 pm)

We will be conducting a Special Night Walk during the school holidays at the earlier time of 6 to 8 pm on Saturday 2nd, 9th, 16th & 23rd July 2022.

The tour will introduce you to the much-loved White-lipped tree frog, Northern stony creek frogs and many other species of amphibians.  For those who like spiders, there are many that can be seen on the tour such as Net-casting spiders, Garden orb-weavers and Huntsmans.  For people not a fan of the spiders, they will be relieved to know that they are usually happily weaving their webs or sitting on tree-trunks out of range.  Most of these animals only come out at night and therefore are generally unseen by most people.

Other animals that can be seen on a Let’s Go Buggin Night Walk include Micro-bats, Papuan frogmouth birds, Striped possums, Speckled flying foxes, Cicadas, Crickets, Longicorn beetles and even Pademelons and Echidnas.

We commence our walk of discovery immediately after our briefing at the meeting point.  We get you fitted with head torches and check you have your camera equipment ready to go.

We will start to see amazing creatures as soon as we start.  Keep an eye out in the trees for Striped Possums, Papuan Frogmouths and Flying Foxes.   Looking out on tree trunks and leaves for spiders, and nocturnal insects like beetles, crickets and cicadas.  We follow the boardwalk and come out the other side, following the path around to the Frog Pond.  How many frogs can you see?

Camera Hire  or  BYO

You can capture great pictures with some of the newer smart phones.  A lot of ‘point and shoot’ or ‘compact cameras’ have macro settings suitable to photograph small creatures.
